Recommendations for a Linux Distribution and Software Setup for Music Production
Hello LinuxMAO community,
I’m relatively new to Linux and I’m eager to dive into using it for music production. After doing some initial research, I’ve come across various options but am feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the choices available. I’d love to hear your advice and recommendations to help me get started!
Here’s my situation:
Hardware: I’m using an AMD Ryzen 5 processor with 16GB RAM and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface.
Music Production Needs: My focus is on recording, editing, and mixing tracks. I occasionally work with MIDI controllers and virtual instruments.
Experience: I have prior experience with DAWs like Ableton Live and FL Studio on Windows but I’m looking to embrace open-source alternatives.
Specifically, I’m curious about the following:
Linux Distribution: Are there any specific distros optimized for music production that you’d recommend? I’ve heard about Ubuntu Studio and AV Linux but I’d love to know what works best for real-time audio performance.
DAWs and Plugins: Which Linux-compatible DAWs and plugins are reliable and user-friendly? Ardour and LMMS seem popular, but are there others worth exploring?
Optimizations: What tweaks or configurations should I apply to ensure low-latency audio performance? Any must-have software or kernel modifications?
Learning Resources: Are there guides, tutorials, or forums you’d suggest for someone transitioning to music production on Linux?
I’m excited to make this switch and contribute to the open-source music production community. Your insights and suggestions will be invaluable as I set up my new workflow.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Regards
